Donna, 69
✨ Twinsight: Giving back takes a tremendous amount of work and passion. Many give up, but for those that persevere, there is much to gain. Donna's story of survival and resilience, and her continued commitment to helping others takes centre stage.
I am a four time breast cancer survivor. I founded a national charity that reduces the financial burden for women undergoing breast cancer treatment. We've touched the lives of hundreds of women and their families. I am continually inspired by the women I speak to who are struggling with a life threatening illness and trying their best to keep a roof over their heads while in treatment. In this chapter of in my life, as I have all my life, I find purpose in helping others and appreciation for my blessings.
How old are you and how do you feel about this age?
A: 69. I’m grateful to still be here so I can enjoy family and friends.
Three words that describe you.
A: Passionate, grateful, empathic.
What’s one life lesson that you wish you had known earlier?
A: If I were to advise my younger self I might have suggested to make plans even though i recognize that plans can change on a moments notice.
What’s the worst part about aging and what’s the best?
A: The worst part are the physical changes that happen to one’s body. (it feels like a slow deterioration) :) The best part is the wisdom gained from experience.
What is your proudest accomplishment so far?
A: Raising two wonderful human beings.
Have you experienced ageism?
A: Not that I’ve noticed.
What’s your message to the world?
A: Be kind.
Favourite Band, artist or book?
A: BOOK: “Getting to Maybe; How the world is changed.” It’s a practical and optimistic look at how to change the world. I can still remember how inspired I felt when I read stories of people who are making positive change in the world. I bought multiple copies and gave them away.
What sparks your joy these days?
A: Being the company of my children brings me joy. On a more practical level but still makes me happy….I manage the charity that I founded. It provides support to breast cancer patients who are experiencing a significant financial burden during their treatment.
What’s next for you? What does your future-self look like?
A: More of the same. I don’t see myself retiring any time soon. Try new experiences. Read more books.
Do you feel visible?
A: I know what you mean by this question but I don’t feel the need to feel visible. I’m satisfied with the world I inhabit and outside of the few people who know me and respect me for the work I do, I’m fine with that.
Are there things you are doing now that you couldn’t do before?
A: Not really. I was a business person and entrepreneur for a lot of my life so i frequently determined what I wanted to do and when I wanted to do it.
