Energetic, funny, successful

“ I am excited about this new chapter. I love to entertain, ski, golf, hike, workout, travel, enjoy fine wine, and great new recipes. I have a new hobby in puppetry and ventriloquism. Let the transition begin!”

✨Twinsight: Rob's honest take on retirement is a breath of fresh air. He acknowledges the struggle of leaving behind a career and having to redefine oneself in the next chapter of life. We appreciate his candidness and think there should be more talk about this topic. After all, retirement shouldn't just be about sipping piña coladas on a beach somewhere (although that sounds pretty good too). It's a time for self-discovery and finding new passions, but let's not ignore the fact that it can be daunting. Thanks to Rob for shedding light on this important issue!

I am 64 years old turning 65 this April. After a 31 year career in marketing and financial services my retirement day is on the horizon! I am feeling tremendously uneasy about it. My R-Date is March 15th 2024. I identify with my career. My close friends are mainly co-workers and my habits are ingrained! But...at the same time, I am excited about this new chapter. I love to entertain, ski, golf, hike, workout, travel, enjoy fine wine, and great new recipes. I have a new hobby in puppetry and ventriloquism. Let the transition begin!

How old are you and how do you feel about this age?

A: I am 64 years young! God willing I will turn 65 in April. I feel privileged to be this age. There are no guarantees in life, becoming a senior citizen is definitely not one of them.

Three words that describe you.

A: Energetic, funny, successful

What’s one life lesson that you wish you had known earlier?

A: Not to stress so much! I knew the lesson….I just did not adhere to it! Essentially, be more like your yoga instructor.

What’s the worst part about aging and what’s the best?

A: Worst part is there is no warranty on body parts! Things start to hurt. Also, realizing that I am running out of time and have in many (most) categories hit the highest markers I ever will. Best part is free eye exams?

What is your proudest accomplishment so far?

A: Personally, my marriage, (36 years) my two children and two grandchildren. Professionally, meeting and introducing President Bill Clinton for a National Leaders Forum in 2006.

“I have been married to Sandy for 36 years and count this as one of my proudest accomplishments.“

Have you experienced ageism?

A: Yes, in my workplace (of over 4k advisors) many times the first words when meeting colleagues… before even saying hello is…. thought you would be retired by now! Or when are you retiring? I understand they mean well….it still makes me crazy!

What’s your message to the world?

A: Unlike golf, in life you only get one round! Play your best!

Favourite Band, artist or book?

A: Artist is definitely Lionel Ritchie. My wife and I had the great privilege to meet him and hang out with him after one of his shows in Vegas. Saw him in Hawaii in 1987 on our honeymoon. Paid $18.50 per ticket to see him. Thirty five years later I paid $500.00! It was so worth it!  He is 73. I want to be like Lionel when I’m 73! Book by author David Hare…The Buddha in me,The Buddha in you: A Handbook for Happiness

What sparks your joy these days?

A: A great workout, spending time with my family, travelling, going to work and a perfect dry gin martini!

What’s next for you? What does your future-self look like?

A: I wish I knew….I think about next steps and when to retire every day! Most likely continuing to work for another 3-4 years. I am taking my big trips now while I am still working. The additional cash flow allows my wife and I to upgrade the experience. $$$$$:)

Are there traditions in your culture related to aging that you would like to share?

A: Tradition for many folks in my circle is to be proud to retire early with enough money, and to let everyone around you know it! Even my mother who is 92 is very proud and vocal that she is currently enjoying 30 years of retirement and going strong!

Longevity reigns in the Bisson family as Rob visits with his 92 year old mother, June.

Do you feel visible?

A: Yes! So far so good! I have an expressive personality so very difficult not to see or hear me!

Are there things you are doing now that you couldn’t do before?

A: I am financially very healthy. I don't take BS from anybody. It’s a great feeling! I also get a 20% discount on Thursdays at Shoppers Drug Mart!
