Stepping out of her comfort zone and into Rap - a unique story of change.
What an incredible journey. Joy Uncensored tells the story of Joy France - a retired teacher who made a remarkable change after 60 years old. She found retirement to be “predictable & boring” and embarked on what turned out to be a journey of creativity. In a recent article published in The Guardian, France talks about her path to taking on battle rap. As a proven spoken word artist this was her next step and put her way out of her comfort zone.
There are 2 versions of the film produced by @northernheartfilms- an uncensored film and a clean version. Trigger warning on the uncensored version - foul language, adult content, may offend. The rap battle scene is not for everyone but well worth watching - watch how the crowd responds to her; you can actually see the perceptions fly away; truly remarkable. As she articulates, “Now that I’m older I want to be heard.”
There are so many messages in this short film. Here are just a few takeaways that we love:
Just keep trying - take risks and overcome fear of trying new things
Make friends in every generation
Fight ageism and break down these barriers
Challenge yourself to see what you are capable of
Dont judge others - all races and ages are beautiful
Recognize the limits that society or even yourself place on you and know you don’t have to be there - write your own story.
As she says, “that’s where the magic happens.”
Her next challenge is to participate in a rap battle in New York and we cannot wait to see it!
