Social Media Over 60: The Learning Curve

Back in the day, being "social" meant chatting face-to-face or tying up the family phone line for hours—until your parents caught sight of the bill. Fast forward to today, and here we are, navigating the ever-changing world of social media. Let’s just say it’s been a journey, but one full of laughs, lessons, and a fair share of tech hiccups.

We didn’t grow up with smartphones or social platforms. Our first encounter with social media came in our late forties, and we’ve been figuring it out ever since. Now, as sixty-somethings creating content, we’ve discovered it’s not just about posting pictures or videos—it’s about finding your voice, embracing your quirks, and connecting with others.

A Roller Coaster of Emotions!

Learning how to create content on social media has many ups and downs. It’s full of mistakes and doubts along the way. Time, grace and patience are your friend!

What We’ve Learned Along the Way:

  • Awkwardness is Normal. Watching yourself on video can feel strange at first (who knew our voices sounded like that?), but it gets easier with practice. The trick? Start small, don’t overthink it, and embrace the imperfections.

  • Be Yourself. Whether you’re naturally bubbly, calm, or a little sarcastic, lean into what feels like you. We decided early on not to dress up or put on a show—we just show up as we are, glasses glare and all. Authenticity resonates more than perfection.

  • Tech is Your Friend (Eventually). Tools like Canva for graphics or Capcut for editing videos have been lifesavers. At first, they felt intimidating, but with time (and a few “oops” moments), they’ve become part of our routine.

  • Expect the Unexpected. From dogs wandering into the shot to noisy neighbors interrupting our “perfect take,” we’ve learned to laugh and roll with whatever comes our way. It’s all part of the fun.

There is so much that goes on behind the camera - like finding a “weight” for angling the tripod. Who knew?

The Big Takeaway

The more we’ve created, the more we’ve realized that this whole content-creating gig isn’t just about going viral (though we wouldn’t say no to that). It’s about connection. It’s about showing up as we are - ordinary sixty-somethings proving that life doesn’t slow down unless you do.

We’ve learned that stepping outside your comfort zone keeps your brain sharp, your spirit energized, and your sense of humor intact. And for anyone out there wondering if it’s “too late” to join the social media world? Newsflash: It’s not. If we can figure it out, so can you. And who knows? You might even enjoy the process as much as we have.
